Together with adidas Originals we recently teamed up with football player and tattoo artist Christopher Trimmel to talk about his passion for tattoos, his job but also worked on an exclusive editorial for the adidas Superstar with our friend and photographer Kane Holz. Check out the full editorial and interview down below.
How did you get into tattooing and why?
Tattoos have always been an omnipresent part of art. I already enjoyed painting and designing in my childhood. Since tattooing is based on drawing plus sees designing the motifs as the basic building block it naturally went from one to the other. I became a professional soccer player quite late, that‘s why I wanted to enroll at the Vienna ADBK back in the days. I still have the application portfolio with my drawings at home – what a nice reminder.
How do you manage the balance between sport and lifestyle, football and tattooing?
When I tattoo, I’m in a design mode. It is an artistic process and for me it is also a form of mediation. Football is a very fast-paced and performance-related business that is associated with continuous pressure. Tattooing keeps me balanced in my everyday life – it brings a kind of deceleration with it and partially grounded me.
Are there parallels between sport and tattooing for you?
Definitely. Physical and mental fitness play a major role in both professional fields. As a tattoo artist you have to sit straight in one spot for several hours, so you have to stay fit when you are not in the studio as well. Apart from the consistently needed concentration the mental part plays a big role, just like during a match. Just one small mistake and the entire “work of art” or “game” may thus turn into a flop.
How do you get creative? Does your environment influence you?
I’m lucky enough to live in an art-loving city like Berlin. Currently I live in the middle of this wonderful city and I‘m surrounded by numerous art galleries that inspire me with their works almost every day. I like visiting the contemporary galleries on my travels and often go to different tattoo studios to get an idea of the local tattoo scene.
What makes the adidas Superstar so special for you?
I am an old school advocate. Anyone who knows me from my youth knows me only in one outfit (my signature look back then, but I think we just all looked the same): baggies, fitted cap, oversized t-shirt, everything was actually oversized, my superstars and my beloved skateboard. I begged my father for weeks to buy me these sneakers. That was a great time …
