Challenging the norms w/ Selassie and the Jordan Air Ship ‚Tech Grey‘

31. Mai 2023

The Air Ship is cemented in sneaker history as Michael Jordan’s first Nike shoe before the introduction of the Air Jordan 1. Promising potential and unrivaled greatness, multi-disciplined artist Selassie challenges the norms with the Jordan Air Ship “Tech Grey”.

Hailing from Accra Dansoman, Ghana, Selassie moved to Germany at the age of 16. Now based in Berlin, his art conveys naivety and innocence, inspired by childhood memories of walking to school. Determined to break the stereotypes and mentality of kids from Africa to Europe, his work is authentic, driven by intuition and self-love.

Accompanied with the Jordan Air Ship „Tech Grey“, we joined Selassie in his practices that he maintains to follow his path as painter, musician, fashion icon, poet and man of community.

First introduced in 1984, the Air Ship was the spiritual predecessor to the Air Jordan 1, which shared a few design elements such as the sole, which also carried over to the Dunk and Terminator.

In his first appearance for the Chicago Bulls in a pre-season match against the New York Knicks on 15 October 1984, the Michael Jordan stepped onto the court of the Glen Falls Civic Center wearing the Nike Air Ship. The now infamous black and red pair attracted the attention of the NBA for violating its uniformity of uniform rule. It turned out to be a clever marketing coup, with Nike paying the $5,000 per game fine to keep the banned colorway on court.

Although the Air Jordan 1 went into production immediately after Michael Jordan signed a $6 million contract with Nike, his first signature model was not yet ready when he gave his regular season debut on 26 October 1984. Instead, third overall draft pick scored his first 16 points in the NBA against the Washington Bullets at Chicago Stadium in a white and red pair of Air Ship.
