When the adidas NMD first hit shelves in 2015, it was welcomed with unpredictable hype due in part to its insane comfort, versatility, Instagram posts, and – of course – Kanye West and his timely move to Adidas. Over the past six years, the silhouette has seen a handful of reissues, from Pharrell’s collaborative NMD Hu to the recently unveiled R1 V3.
Now, adidas is looking to build on the success story with its most striking revision of the model to date, the NMD_S1. A new silhouette of the premium class, with minimalist, almost architectural design. Together with Berlin-based design studio New Tendency, we designed and produced an exclusive piece of furniture that will be available exclusively at solebox and in limited quantities.
solebox teamed up with Berlin-based design studio New Tendency for the campaign to create an exclusive and limited edition piece of furniture that will be available exclusively at solebox’s Berlin store and via raffle through Highsnobiety. We worked on a modular piece referencing the look of a shoe box, that can also be used as a wall shelf or side table. The Piece was designed to match the modern design of the shoe and is made of untreated steel with laser engraved logos on the inside and milling in the lid.

Hard to distinguish from its own DNA, the new S-Series NMD features a woven, sock-like upper. The upper is made up of four different parts: ribbed toes, sheer mid panels, flexible heels, and a streamlined collar and woven tongue. The BOOST-loaded midsole is now fully encased in a milky translucent, raised midsole sleeve that features protruding lugs reminiscent of the original silhouette.
The outsole, a feature that is really talked about, is one of the most intriguing aspects of the pair, including a special Trefoil profile and an instep block that is once again a nod to the OG. Lastly, the removal of the lateral heel’s special ‚Edition 1‘ detailing and branding sees the pair favoring a clean slate for its follow-up release.
Pulling together contemporary technologies with archive influences and packaging them in a design that is totally future-facing, the clean, sculptural silhouette of the NMD_S1 is a style for those who place conspicuous minimalism at the heart of their footwear choices.
The adidas Originals NMD_S1 will be available in limited quantities at solebox online and instore at solebox Berlin only from February 25th.
The limited edition piece of furniture will be raffled off exclusively through Highsnobiety and given out to customers of the Berlin store – we recommend being there early.
